Primary Election
The Primary Election is an election to determine which candidates will qualify for the General Election for a given party. In Iowa you must be a member of the political party of which you wish to vote for in order to participate. This is known as a "closed primary." The primary election is held on the 1st Tuesday following the 1st Monday in June of each even-numbered year.

*Please note that the county candidate filing period starts on Monday, March 4, 2024 and ends at 5PM on Friday, March 22, 2024. County Candidates file nomination papers with the County Auditor.

Voter Registration
Pre-registration deadline for voter registration closes at 5:00 p.m. Monday, May 20, 2024. Persons wishing to participate in this election who register to vote after May 20, 2024, will be required to provide proof of identification (i.e. current and valid photo identification card with an expiration date), AND proof of residency in their voting precinct, when they go to the polls on election day, or when they request an absentee ballot. Other provisions may also apply. Persons not registered to vote by May 20, 2024, should expect a longer processing time at the polls on election day.
Absentee Ballots
Absentee Ballot Request Forms will be accepted beginning Tuesday, March 26, 2024. Ballots will be available to be mailed and vote in-person beginning Wednesday, May 15, 2024.
- The last day an absentee ballot may be mailed to a voter for this election is Monday, May 20, 2024. (Postal delivery is now two to five days each way.)
- In-person absentee voting in the office of the Jones County Auditor closes at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, June 3, 2024.
- Requests for absentee ballots must be in writing and should be mailed or delivered to:

Voted absentee ballots returned by mail MUST be returned no later than 8:00 p.m. on ELECTION DAY, Tuesday, June 4, 2024 to be considered on time to be counted. Voters are advised to keep in mind that postal delivery is now two to five days.
Extended Hours
Extended and Saturday hours are available for voter registration and absentee voting in the Jones County Auditor’s Office. In addition to regular hours of Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., extended office hours during the 2024 primary election season will be as follows:
- Friday, March 22 - 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Thursday, April 18 - 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Monday, May 20 - 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Friday, May 31 - 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Saturday, June 1 - 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Tuesday, June 4 - 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.* or later, depending on election activities
- Friday, June 14 - 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
